The Kalulu Reading Method in France

La méthode Kalulu est une méthode syllabique-phonique. Expérimentée depuis 2022 dans le Val d’Oise et depuis 2023 dans l’académie de Versailles, elle est très bien reçue par les enseignants. Cette méthode, facile à utiliser, est le fruit de recherches scientifiques menées par les deux co-fondateurs d’Excello, Stanislas Dehaene, professeur au Collège de France, et Cassandra Potier Watkins, post-doctorante, ainsi que leur équipe au Collège de France.

To learn to read, an area in the left visual cortex—often described as the brain’s “mailbox”—must specialize in recognizing the shapes of letters. During reading instruction, a dedicated circuit connects this visual region to the brain areas responsible for processing language sounds (syllables and phonemes). This circuit lets us link letters to sounds, or graphemes to phonemes.

Quand on apprend à lire, on commence par le « décodage ». Un exemple : lorsque l’enfant est confronté pour la première fois au mot « lapin », il va décomposer celui-ci en graphèmes (des chaînes de lettres qui correspondent à un son). 

With practice and repetition, they move from decoding to automatically recognizing words as a whole.

You might have heard about the “reading wars”: phonics-based approaches vs. whole-word approaches (“global” methods). Whole-word programs stem from the observation that skilled readers recognize entire words without consciously decoding them. Although well-intentioned, evidence in France and abroad repeatedly shows that early phonics instruction is the most effective approach, particularly for children at risk of learning difficulties.

Lors du cycle de conférence Agir pour l’Éducation de 2023, Jérôme Deauvieau, sociologue du département de sciences sociales de l’ENS Paris et membre du Conseil Scientifique de l’Éducation nationale, et Paul Gioia, doctorant sous sa direction, ont présenté le résultat de leur étude Formalect (2021) sur 20% des CP de France. À partir des résultats des évaluations nationales, ils montrent qu’apprendre à lire avec une méthode autre que syllabique-phonique fait baisser significativement le nombre de mots lus en une minute et le niveau de compréhension écrite à la mi-CP et au début du CE1, et ce quelque soit le contexte social de l’école. Cette baisse est d’autant plus importante chez les élèves les plus fragiles à l’entrée au CP, ce qui signifie que les élèves ayant déjà appris ce qui doit être transmis ou qui sont déjà pourvus de certains prérequis sont relativement avantagés par rapport aux élèves qui entrent au CP sans ces connaissances. Les méthodes autres que syllabiques aggravent donc les inégalités scolaires.

In short, the phonics-based, syllabic approach is built on our understanding of the neurological underpinnings of reading and is validated by statistical data.

The Kalulu Method

La méthode Kalulu repose sur l’apprentissage du décodage par la correspondance graphème-phonème.

It comes in several formats—booklets, games, and a digital app—allowing for practice, repetition, and vocabulary and spelling development. It’s a turnkey solution with a predefined progression, ideal for whole-class or small-group work.

Ces différents supports permettent au professeur de travailler la lecture selon plusieurs modalités, tant en classe entière qu’en ateliers.

Your Kalulu Toolkit 

Kalulu provides:

    Printed Materials: Four student booklets. 

    Digital App: Available on tablets and smartphones, mirroring the booklets’ progression with lesson reminders and mini-games.

    “Bien joué ! Lecture” Game Pack: Three board games for small-group play, guided by teachers or independently. These games build oral reading skills, fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and mastery of French spelling rules.

Accessibility is central: Kalulu materials are offered at low cost, in easily printable formats, and under a Creative Commons license. Clear guidance is provided on following scientific recommendations, as well as on pacing and activities.

The Reading Booklets

The method features four booklets, kept intentionally minimal in design so children feel they can read everything.

    Each booklet is sized to show students a tangible, attainable goal. Finishing a booklet is an achievable milestone.

Because students take their booklets home at the end of each learning period, teachers are encouraged to remind them and their families to revisit previous lessons—a proven way to reinforce learning.

Each lesson page details which grapheme-phoneme pairing to teach, along with sample syllables, words, and short sentences. The teacher’s version also includes a corresponding illustration.

Adapted booklets exist for children with learning difficulties.
