Excello Joins the 2025 “Agir pour l’Éducation” Conference Series at the Collège de France, Focusing on Mathematics Education

About the Conference Series

“Agir pour l’Éducation” is a collective effort by Collège de France professors to address challenges in the French education system. Their approach is to understand, advise, and act across their various fields of expertise, using open, interdisciplinary scientific methods that engage both education professionals and students.

One of the most pressing issues today is mathematics. Often seen as difficult, math can also be a source of beauty, mystery, and excitement—yet many students lose interest in it. Even more worrying, studies over the past three decades show a steady decline in French students’ math performance, especially in arithmetic and problem-solving. According to the TIMSS survey, France now ranks at the bottom among European countries in math.

Each conference takes place from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Collège de France (11, Place Marcelin Berthelot, 75005 Paris), followed by a Q&A session.

The talks will be held in the Marguerite de Navarre Amphitheater, except for the May 21 session, which will move to the Maurice Halbwachs Amphitheater.

Wednesday, January 22, 2025 Elizabeth Spelke (Professor of Psychology at Harvard) – “The Cognitive Foundations of Mathematics: Early and Universal Intuitions.”

Wednesday, April 2, 2025 Marie Amalric (Neuroscientist and Junior Professor at Inserm) – “What Changes in the Brain When We Learn Mathematics?”

Wednesday, May 21, 2025 Monica Neagoy (PhD in Mathematics Education) – “How to Foster a Love of Mathematics Using the Singapore Method?”

Tuesday, June 10, 2025 Naama Friedmann (Professor at Tel Aviv University) – “Difficulties in Numbers and Difficulties in Letters—Do They Necessarily Go Hand in Hand?”

Wednesday, June 18, 2025 Emmanuel Sander (Professor at the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences, University of Geneva) – “What Makes a Math Problem ‘Beautiful’? Reconciling Intuition and Mathematical Insight.”

All sessions will be livestreamed on the Collège de France Foundation YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/FondationduCollgedeFrance/streams
